Fall Internship: INTERNS NEEDED FOR INNOVATIVE NEW PROGRAM FOR TEEN GIRLS! The Creative Action Project (CAP) is an afterschool and summer program that serves a diverse group of teen girls in the Cambridge Public Schools. CAP helps girls develop tools for critical thinking and creative expression, supports girls’ development as leaders, and encourages them to work together to make positive change. Participants will benefit from activities that build on girls’ strengths and encourage them to explore who they are and who they want to become. CAP activities include group discussions, creative projects, social change projects, guest speakers, field trips, community service, college/career exploration, and more. Girls will explore issues affecting young women today; build leadership skills; design and implement social change projects to address issues in their communities; learn about the history of women’s activism and women’s movements worldwide; meet local women and teen activists; and much more. Some recent activities and workshops included topics such as Building Self-Esteem, Unlearning Racism, Exploring Gender Stereotypes in the Media, Healthy Eating & Fitness, Self-Defense, and Interview Skills. CAP participants are a diverse group of 9th-12th grade girls from a broad range of backgrounds including Haitian, Nigerian, South Asian, Ethiopian, Latin American, Native American, African-American, Vietnamese and others. Girls gain valuable intercultural skills as they work with peers from this wide variety of ethnic and cultural experiences. Girls also benefit from working with women of different ages, including teen Peer Leaders; college Interns; and adult Mentors and Tutors. The Creative Action Project is the newest initiative of Cambridge Community Services (CCS), a private non-profit community-based organization with a mission to identify human service needs in Cambridge, and to develop innovative strategies and programs that can be instituted as ongoing resources in this and other communities. The agency’s current emphasis is on youth development.
